As from Thursday 15th December 2011 the weekly livestock sales at Hallworthy Stockyard, will take place on Thursdays instead of Fridays. Announcing the changes David Kivell lead store cattle auctioneer said “the change will deliver real benefits in terms of reaching buyers and has been made possible by Kivells ability to now run three continuous days of store stock sales starting with Holsworthy on a Wednesday, Hallworthy on a Thursday and Exeter on a Friday. This unique offer has been made possible as a result of the firm being favored with instructions to run Exeter Livestock Centre as of Spring 2012 by Exeter City Council. It will strengthen our ability to create new marketing opportunities for all our clients’ livestock.

Amongst the younger stores Robert Hawkins of Aylesbeare between Honiton and Exeter topped the auction with an Angus steer reaching £1090.

The 2nd dispersal is the Landhydroc yard of Pedigree and Reg. Dartmoor Mares, 3year olds, Youngsters and the yard Stallion who has picked up a hat full of prizes himself aswell as producing some of the smartest Dartmoors around. Amongst the Hunters and riders going under the hammer are a strong consignment up from Liskeard aswell as the a friendly Giant from M/s Harris of Launceston. At the time of writing Kivells have received entries totalling 60 with more coming in all the time.

Kivells of Holsworthy saw a highly successful sale of TB restricted cattle on Monday with a top call of £1162 for a smart Simmental steer from Messrs Lomas & Partners of Cornborough Farm, Bideford. Their consignment of 29 cattle attracted immense interest with buyers competing well to purchase, which in turn resulted in the top 10 of Messrs Lomas cattle averaging over the £1000 mark! Also scoring well was Raymond Heard of Hartland who also saw his best cattle fly past the £1000 milestone with a top for him at £1023 with others a £1006.

Another highly successful sale of TB restricted store cattle saw an overall top of the day at £908 for some strong steers on behalf of Mr FG Tapp & Son of Rackenford, Tiverton, with others from the same farm at £830. Not too far behind was Messrs Caerhayes Farms of Goran, Cornwall at £815 with other steers from the same farm at £740 and £708.

The seventeenth annual Holsworthy Dairy Evening held at Holsworthy Livestock Market on Thursday 4 November 2010 saw a prize fund of £4100. A quality entry of dairy cattle from across the South West met a large attendance of Dairy Farmers and saw a lively trade especially for the prize winning cattle. Taking the top bid of the evening was the Overall Reserve Champion and first prize heifer “Scraesdon Shottle Ivy 8” sold by Treginegar Dairy Farm of Padstow, Cornwall at £2600 to Derek Parsons and family from the Cornish “Ottervale” Pedigree herd at Camelford. Overall Champion was awarded to the cow class with Messrs TN Morrow and Partners of the “Maymor” herd at Ladock near Truro taking top honours with “Maymor Precious 73” this cow also won the Robin Brimacombe cup for the best Homebred Cow and went onto top the prices in the cow class selling at £2400 to Messrs PA and CM Rogers of the “Lancombe” herd, of Ashprington near Totnes in South Devon.

There was a superb crowd with thirty different buyers around the ring with a buzzing atmosphere leading to a very fast trade and cattle being sold in to Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset and Cheshire. Some of the finest breeding in the Ayrshire breed went under the hammer at Exeter with two annual draft sales from Messrs Nichols “Hilltown” herd and East Church Ayrshires “East Church” herd being two of the leading herds in the south west.

A new record for a dairy animal sold at auction in the U.K was established at the first Willsbro Sale, held at the Royal Cornwall Showground at Wadebridge, when the five month old Willsbro Emilyann ET was sold for 90,000 guineas. Impressive figures from the new genomic technology coupled with the fact that her dam Wabash-Way Emilyann is one of the hottest properties in world cattle breeding, having been sold for $630,000 in 2008, conspired to make her first daughter sold in Europe the subject of terrific interest and five different parties bid in excess of 50,000 guineas to try and secure her. Finally it was Jose Agustin Celis Romero who made the final 90,000 guinea bid to take her back to his Granja “La Ponderosa” in Cantabria, Spain.

With the weather good and a general shortage of forage and grass trade for commercial milk was easier than of late although first quality sold to a premium. Top of the day was from Designer Jerseys of Ingatestone, Essex with an outstanding consignment of heifers. A stunning heifer “Designer Vindication Elegance” a Vindication daughter out of the superb show cow “Grayridge GC Elegance EX93” being a tremendous prospect for the future this heifer is due in May and was exceptionally correct and stylish, she sold well to £2362 to Edward Morgan of Carmarthenshire. From the same consignment “Designer Signature Scorpion 6” a Signature daughter with 4 generations of VG and EX behind her she sold into a Dorset herd due in May for £1312.
